(soft intense music) - [Pati] A defining feature of every country is its borders.
But the lines are never as static as they appear.
The modern-day line between the U.S. and Mexico has rested here.
A 1,951-mile stretch from the Pacific coast to the Gulf of Mexico.
Really?
I want to explore what happens to the people who live, love, dream in the spaces in between.
You gonna give me a ride?
- Sí.
- Let's do it.
(speaking in Spanish language) - Woo-hoo.
I'm Pati Jinich.
Oh my god.
It's so spicy.
(woman laughing) - [Chef] Uno, dos... tres.
(dough slapping) - I'm a chef, a writer, an immigrant.
(meat sizzling) I'm about to eat two pounds of a burrito.
In season two of La Frontera, I'm exploring from the Pacific coast to California and back.
To New Mexico and Chihuahua.
- I will hope for them that they hold on to faith.
(soft tranquil music) - [Pati] A place where the terrain is diverse as its people.
Fronterizos.
- It means that we're always straddling that border.
We're taking the best from both cultures and merging it into our own.
- [Pati] The alchemy of which they are born produces the most inspiring people and unexpected stories.
(soft singing) - You touched my heart.
It was beautiful.
- Thank you.
(children laughing) - [Pati] This is no doubt a place of continuous struggle.
(speaking in Spanish language) - Let me help you with water.
- The idea of just families and people making this journey and perishing, and it's a preventable death.
This is not meant to happen.
- [Pati] But also, of unprecedented possibilities.
Our world of kindness, wonder, and creativity.
- And so we want to welcome the Coro Gay Tejas to our family.
(people clapping) - So how did you navigate your American-Mexican heritage?
- I feel like art helps me kind of explore those worlds.
I feel like it's almost like a dance.
(upbeat music) - Fronterizos have a saying, "Ni de aquí, ni de allá."
"Neither from here, nor there."
To be a borderland, there is to be a part of a third culture.
- So right along here is a good set of skunk tracks.
- One defined by resourcefulness.
This is where every salsa that you have tried began.
(speaking in Spanish language) - Collaboration and empowerment.
Uno, tres (laughs) I'm Pati Jinich.
And this is La Frontera.
