[Cheers and applause]
[Playing "Your Good Thing (Is About to End)"]
♫I don't have to beg you to hold me♫
♫'Cause somebody else will♫
♫You don't have to love me when I want it♫
♫No, baby♫
♫Yeah, I got somebody that will♫
♫Some kind of friends say they don't need it♫
♫But all the time they're trying to get it♫
♫Look out♫
♫Your good thing♫
♫Is about to come to an end♫
♫Your real good thing♫
♫Baby, it's about to end♫
♫All those nights I sat and watched the four walls♫
♫Didn't have to watch them all alone♫
♫And when other men said they wanted me, baby♫
♫I didn't have to tell them I was your very own♫
♫You have all the love that I've got, now♫
♫But even ice melts to water, baby, and gets hot♫
♫So look out♫
♫Your good thing♫
♫Is about to come to an end♫
♫Your real good thing♫
♫It's about to end♫
♫Gettin' myself back together♫
♫Is gonna be a big problem, I know♫
♫But when that right man says he wants me♫
♫You can bet I ain't gonna say no♫
♫'Cause your real good thing♫
♫Just came to an end♫
♫I said your real♫
♫Real good thing♫
♫Your good thing♫
♫Your good thing, baby♫
♫Your real good thing♫
♫Real good thing♫
♫Yeah, yeah♫
♫Yeah♫
[Cheers and applause]
Thank you so much!
Long live "Austin City Limits"!
[Cheers and applause]
Well, what do y'all think?
Not a --
[Cheers and applause]
That's not a bad way to kick off this birthday party
for "Austin City Limits."
And, trust me, this party is only getting started.
Next up, a singer, songwriter, actor, Rhodes scholar --
the list goes on and on.
He's one of the best at what he does, and he's joined
by an amazing woman who's not just my co-host tonight,
but a great singer-songwriter in her own right.
Please welcome Kris Kristofferson
and Sheryl Crow.
[Cheers and applause]
It is my good fortune and my honor
to get to sing one of my favorite songs,
"Me and Bobby McGee," which Kris Kristofferson wrote.
[Playing "Me and Bobby McGee"]
♫Busted flat in Baton Rouge, headin' for the train♫
♫Feelin' nearly faded as my jeans♫
♫Bobby thumbed a diesel down just before it rained♫
♫Took us all the way to New Orleans♫
♫I pulled my harpoon out of my dirty red bandanna♫
♫And was blowing soft while Bobby sang the blues♫
♫Windshield wipers slappin' time♫
♫I was holdin' Bobby's hand in mine♫
♫We sang every song that driver knew♫
♫Freedom's just another word for nothin' left to lose♫
♫And nothin' don't mean nothin' if it ain't free♫
♫Feelin' good was easy, Lord, when Bobby sang the blues♫
♫You know, feelin' good was good enough for me♫
♫Me, too!♫
♫Good enough for me and my Bobby McGee♫
♫From the Kentucky coal mine to the California sun♫
♫Bobby shared the secrets of my soul♫
♫Standing right beside me, Lord♫
♫Through everything I done♫
-♫Every night he kept me♫ -♫Every night she kept me♫
♫From the cold♫
♫One day up near Salinas, Lord, I let him slip away♫
♫He was lookin' for that home, and I hope he finds it♫
♫But I'd trade all my tomorrows for one single yesterday♫
♫To be holdin' Bobby's body next to mine♫
♫Freedom's just another word for nothin' left to lose♫
♫And nothin' is all that Bobby left me, yeah♫
♫Feelin' good was easy, Lord, when Bobby sang the blues♫
♫Hey, feelin' good was good enough for me♫
♫Yeah♫
♫Good enough for me and my Bobby McGee♫
♫La-da-da la-da-da-da la-da-da da-da da-da♫
♫La-da-da da-la-da la-da, Bobby McGee♫
♫La-da-la-da-la-da la-da-la-da-da♫
♫One more time for me and Bobby McGee♫
♫La-da-da la-da-da la da-da la da-da♫
♫La-da-da la da-da la da-da♫
♫La-da-da, hey, Bobby McGee♫
♫La-da-da la-da-da-da-da-da-da♫
♫La-da-da la-da-da la-da-da na-na-na♫
♫Hey, hey, hey, Bobby McGee♫
♫Lord, I call him my lover, call him my man♫
♫And I call him my lover just the best I can♫
♫Come on, where is, where is Bobby McGee?♫
♫Oh, lo-de lo-de, lo-de, lo-de, lo-de, lo-de, lo♫
♫Hey, hey, hey, Bobby McGee, yeah, yeah♫
♫Lo-de, lo-de, lo-de, lo-de, lo-de, lo♫
♫Hey, hey, hey, Bobby McGee♫
[Cheers and applause]
Kris Kristofferson, everybody!
As we're reminded time and time again on "Austin City Limits,"
there's nothing like discovering a great new artist or band.
Just a few short years ago,
the world discovered this great, soulful,
and unique group from Alabama.
And they've been shaking up
the musical landscape ever since.
Make way for Alabama Shakes!
[Cheers and applause]
[Playing "Gimme All Your Love"]
♫So much is going on♫
♫But you can always come around♫
♫Yeah♫
♫Why don't you sit with me for just a little while?♫
♫Tell me what's wrong♫
♫If you just gimme all your love♫
♫Ooh♫
♫Gimme all you got, babe♫
♫Gimme all your love♫
♫Ooh♫
♫Stick me♫
♫Tell me what you want me to do♫
♫You say the world, it ain't no good to you♫
♫Well, come on♫
♫Walk with me for just a little while♫
♫Tell me I can make it right♫
♫If you just gimme all your love♫
♫Ooh♫
♫Gimme all you got, babe♫
♫Gimme all your love♫
♫Ooh♫
[Cheers and applause]
♫Gimme all your love♫
♫Gimme all you got, babe♫
♫Ooh♫
♫Gimme all your love♫
♫Ooh hoo hoo hoo hoo hoo hoo♫
[Cheers and applause]
[Cheers and applause]
What an honor it is to host this party What an honor it is to host this party
for "Austin City Limits"
with someone who I've admired for so many years.
He's an extraordinary actor,
a genuine down-to-earth human being,
and on top of that, he sings and plays so powerfully.
He's actually my kind of man, if you know what I'm saying.
So let's get him back out here to do what he loves the most.
Jeff Bridges, everybody.
BRIDGES: Yeah!
[Cheers and applause]
All right, we're going to do a Stephen Bruton tune.
I met this guy about 30 years ago,
when Kris assembled a bunch of his music buddies
up to Montana there to make Heaven's Gate.
And this fella's no longer with us.
We miss him dearly.
Uh, I'm talking about --
Well, the movie Crazy Heart is dedicated to this fella.
He wrote a bunch of songs for the movie.
Me, personally, he was my teacher, my preacher,
my wizard, my rock.
I'm talking about Stephen Bruton.
[Cheers and applause]
[Playing "What a little bit of love can do"]
♫I know that you've been feeling down and blue♫
♫There ain't nothing really wrong with you♫
♫You just need a little tending to♫
♫Let me show you what a little bit of love can do♫
♫It's amazing what a little bit of love can do♫
♫I can tell that someone needs a little help♫
♫Having trouble getting on with someone else♫
♫I'm here to tell you that everything is gonna be fine♫
♫Yes, I know you're hurting 'cause your heart is breaking♫
♫I think that I can alleviate the situation♫
♫Look in my eyes, listen to me, baby♫
♫You put your little hand in mine♫
♫I know that you've been feeling down and blue♫
♫There ain't nothing really wrong with you♫
♫You just need a little tending to♫
♫Let me show you what a little bit of love can do♫
♫Take your time, listen to what all I'm saying♫
♫I've got a hunch that loving you is worth the waiting♫
♫I'm gonna prove it to you before this night is through♫
♫There's a way to turn your pain right into pleasure♫
♫Drastic times seem to call for drastic measures♫
♫You need to know, girl, I can fix you♫
♫If the remedy is tried and true♫
♫I know that you've been feeling down and blue♫
♫But there ain't nothing really wrong with you♫
♫You just need a little tending to♫
♫Let me show you what a little bit of love can do♫
♫I know that you've been feeling down and blue♫
♫But there ain't nothing really wrong with you♫
♫You just need a little tending to♫
♫Let me show you what a little bit of love can do♫
♫I know that you've been feeling down and blue♫
♫But there ain't nothing really wrong with you♫
♫You just need a little tending to♫
♫Let me show you what a little bit of love can do♫
♫It's amazing what a little bit of love can do♫
♫Let me show you what a little bit of love can do♫
[Cheers and applause]
We love you, Stephen.

♫Pretty woman♫
♫Walking down the street♫
♫Pretty woman♫

♫Pretty woman♫
♫I don't believe you♫
♫You're not the truth♫
♫No one could look as good as you♫
♫Mercy♫
♫Pretty woman♫
♫Won't you pardon me?♫
♫Pretty woman♫
♫I couldn't help but see♫
♫Pretty woman♫
♫You look lovely as can be♫
♫Are you lonely, just like me?♫
♫Oh, woman, oh, woman, don't treat me so mean♫
♫You're the meanest old woman that I've ever seen♫
♫But I guess if you said so♫
♫I'm gonna have to pack my things and go♫
♫That's right♫
♫Hit the road, Jack♫
♫And don't you come back no more♫
♫No more, no more, no more♫
♫Hit the road, Jack♫
♫And don't you come back no more♫
♫Oh, oh, oh♫
♫Hit the road, Jack♫
♫And don't you come back no more♫
♫No more, no more, no more♫
♫Hit the road, Jack♫
♫And don't you come back no more♫
♫Now, baby, listen, baby, don't ya treat me this-a way♫
♫I'll be back on my feet some day♫
♫I don't care if you do, 'cause it's understood♫
♫You ain't got no money, you just ain't no good♫
♫Well, I guess if you say so♫
♫I'm gonna have to pack my things and go♫
♫That's right, hit the road, Jack♫
♫And don't you come back no more♫
♫No more, no more, no more♫
♫Hit the road, Jack♫
♫And don't you come back no more♫
[Neil Young's "Heart of Gold" plays]
♫I've been to Hollywood♫
♫I went to Redwood♫
♫I crossed the ocean for a heart of gold♫
♫I've been in my mind♫
♫It's such a fine line♫
♫That keeps me searching for a heart of gold♫
♫And I'm getting old♫
♫Keeps me searching for a heart of gold♫
♫And I'm getting old♫
Now we return to the original "Austin City Limits" Studio 6A, where it all began 40 years ago.
Here is Matthew McConaughey.
[Cheers and applause]
Good evening, everybody.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Yeah, so it all started right here.
Listen, tonight we celebrate
"Austin City Limits'" 40th anniversary
by honoring the man that started it all.
Along with his sidekick, Trigger, will you please welcome
someone I can call a friend,
the one and only Mr. Willie Nelson?
[Cheers and applause]
[Strums guitar]
[Playing "Whiskey River"]
♫Whiskey River, take my mind♫
♫Don't let her memory torture me♫
♫Whiskey River, don't run dry♫
♫You're all I've got, take care of me♫
♫Whiskey River, take my mind♫
♫Don't let her memory torture me♫
♫Whiskey River, don't run dry♫
♫You're all I've got, take care of me♫
♫I'm drowning in a whiskey river♫
♫Bathing my memoried mind in the wetness of its soul♫
♫Feeling the amber current flowin' from my mind♫
♫And warm an empty heart you left so cold♫
♫Whiskey River, take my mind♫
♫And don't let her memory torture me♫
♫Whiskey River, don't run dry♫
♫You're all I've got, take care of me♫
♫Whiskey River, take my mind♫
♫And don't let her memory torture me♫
♫Whiskey River, don't run dry♫
♫You're all I've got, take care of me♫
[Cheers and applause]
Thank y'all very much.
How are y'all doing?
[Cheers and applause]
Thank y'all for coming out.
This is one of those special evenings,
and here's a real special guy I want to introduce to y'all,
my friend Mr. Lyle Lovett.
[Cheers and applause]
[Playing "Funny How Time Slips Away"]
♫Well, hello there♫
♫My, it's been a long, long time♫
[Cheers and applause]
♫How am I doing?♫
♫Oh, I guess that I'm doing fine♫
♫It's been so long now♫
♫But it seems now♫
♫That it was only yesterday♫
♫Gee, ain't it funny♫
♫How time just slips away?♫
♫How's your new love?♫
♫Well, I hope he's doin' fine♫
♫I heard you told him♫
♫You were gonna love him until the end of time♫
♫Now, that's the same thing that you told me♫
♫Seems like just the other day♫
♫Ain't it funny♫
♫How time slips away, yeah?♫
♫Well, I gotta go now♫
♫I guess I'll see you around♫
♫I don't know when, though♫
♫'Cause I never know when I'll be back in town♫
♫But remember when I tell you♫
♫That in time you're gonna pay♫
♫And it's surprising♫
♫How time just slips away♫
♫Ain't it funny how time slips away?♫
♫Ain't it funny♫
♫Ain't it funny♫
♫Funny how time slips away?♫
♫Slips away♫
♫Ain't it funny♫
♫Ain't it funny♫
♫How time slips away?♫
♫Ain't it funny♫
♫How time just slips away?♫
♫Ain't it funny how time just slips away?♫
[Cheers and applause]
Lyle Lovett!
Thank y'all very much.
It's my pleasure now to introduce
none other than the great Miss Emmylou Harris.
[Cheers and applause]
[Playing "Crazy"]
♫I'm crazy♫
♫Crazy for feeling so lonely♫
♫And I'm crazy♫
♫Crazy for feeling so blue♫
♫And I knew♫
♫You'd love me as long as you wanted♫
♫And then someday♫
♫You'd leave me for somebody new♫
♫Worry♫
♫Why do I let myself worry♫
♫Wondering♫
♫What in the world did I do?♫
♫And I'm crazy♫
♫For thinking that my love could hold you♫
♫I'm crazy for trying♫
♫Crazy for crying♫
♫And I'm crazy for loving you♫
♫And I'm crazy♫
♫For thinking that my love could hold you♫
♫I'm crazy for trying♫
♫Crazy for crying♫
♫And I'm crazy♫
♫For loving you♫
[Cheers and applause]
Emmylou, thank you!
[Playing "On the Road Again"]
♫On the road again♫
♫I just can't wait to get on the road again♫
♫The life I love is makin' music with my friends♫
♫And I can't wait to get on the road again♫
♫On the road again♫
♫Goin' places that I've never been♫
♫Seein' things that I may never see again♫
♫And I can't wait to get on the road again♫
♫Everybody sing♫
♫On the road again♫
♫Like a band of gypsies we go down the highway♫
♫We're the best of friends♫
♫Insisting that the world keep turnin' our way♫
♫And our way♫
♫Is on the road again♫
♫Just can't wait to get on the road again♫
♫The life I love is makin' music with my friends♫
♫And I can't wait to get on the road again♫
♫On the road again♫
♫Like a band of gypsies we go down the highway♫
♫We're the best of friends♫
♫Insisting that the world keep turnin' our way♫
♫And our way♫
♫Is on the road again♫
♫I just can't wait to get on the road again♫
♫The life I love is makin' music with my friends♫
♫And I can't wait to get on the road again♫
♫I can't wait to get on the road again♫
[Cheers and applause]
I hear you.
Thank you very much.
Now back to the Moody Theater,
and once again, here's Jeff Bridges.
Texas country music has its own distinct sound
and singers and writers.
You put it all together,
and you've got the perfect introduction
to what's coming next.
Here are two of the finest singer-songwriters
in Texas or anywhere else,
with a song that pretty well sums up the theme tonight.
Please welcome Joe Ely and Robert Earl Keen.
[Cheers and applause]
♫Sherry was a waitress at the only joint in town♫
♫She had a reputation as a girl who got around♫
♫Down Main Street after midnight♫
♫With a brand-new pack of cigs♫
♫A fresh one hangin' from her lips♫
♫A beer between her legs♫
♫She'd ride down to the river and meet with all her friends♫
♫The road goes on forever, and the party never ends♫
[Cheers and applause]
♫Sonny was a loner♫
♫Older than the rest♫
♫He was going in the Navy♫
♫But couldn't pass the test♫
♫So he hung around town♫
♫Sold a little pot♫
♫The law got wind of Sonny♫
♫And one day he got caught♫
♫But he was back in business♫
♫When they set him free again♫
♫The road goes on forever♫
♫And the party never ends♫
♫Sonny's playin' 8-ball♫
♫At the joint where Sherry works♫
♫When some drunken out-of-towner♫
♫Put his hand up Sherry's skirt♫
♫Sonny took his pool cue♫
♫Laid the drunk out on the floor♫
♫Stuffed a dollar in her tip jar♫
♫And walked on out the door♫
♫She's runnin' right behind him♫
♫Reachin' for his hand♫
♫The road goes on forever, and the party never ends♫
♫They jumped in his pickup♫
♫Sonny jammed it down in gear♫
♫Sonny looked at Sherry♫
♫Let's get on outta here♫
♫The stars were high above them♫
♫The moon was in the east♫
♫The sun was settin' on them♫
♫When they reached Miami Beach♫
♫They got a motel by the water♫
♫A quart of Bombay gin♫
♫The road goes on forever♫
♫The party never ends♫
♫They soon ran out of money, but Sonny knew a man♫
♫Who knew some Cuban refugees who dealt in contraband♫
♫Sonny met the Cubans♫
♫In a house just off the route♫
♫With a briefcase full of money♫
♫And a pistol in his boot♫
♫The cards were on the table when the law came bustin' in♫
♫The road goes on forever, and the party never ends♫
♫The Cubans grabbed the goodies♫
♫Sonny grabbed the jack♫
♫He broke a bathroom window, and climbed on out the back♫
♫Sherry drove the pickup through the alley on the side♫
♫Where a lawman tackled Sonny, was reading him his rights♫
♫She stepped into the alley with a single shot .410♫
♫The road goes on forever♫
♫The party never ends♫
♫They left the lawman lyin'♫
♫They made their getaway♫
♫They got back to the motel♫
♫Just before the break of day♫
♫Sonny gave her all the money♫
♫And he blew her a little kiss♫
♫If they ask you how this happened♫
♫Say I forced you into this♫
♫She watched him as his taillights♫
♫Disappeared around the bend♫
♫The road goes on forever, and the party never ends♫
♫It's Main Street after midnight♫
♫Like it was before♫
♫21 months later♫
♫At the local grocery store♫
♫Sherry buys a paper and a cold sixpack of beer♫
♫The headlines read that Sonny is goin' to the chair♫
♫She pulls back onto Main Street♫
♫In her new Mercedes-Benz♫
♫The road goes on forever, and the party never ends♫
[Cheers and applause]

[Playing "Bright Lights"]
♫Woke up in, woke up in New York City♫
♫Lying on the floor♫
♫Just outside of Marcy's, West 54♫
♫Yeah♫
♫You gonna know my name by the end of the night♫
♫Yeah♫
♫You gonna know my name by the end of the night♫
♫Yeah♫
♫Bright lights, big city going to my head♫
♫Bright lights, big city going to my head♫
♫Bright lights, big city going to my head♫
♫I don't care, no♫
♫'Cause you don't care, no♫
♫Start off with the bottle♫
♫End it up with the bottle♫
♫Taking shots, waiting on tomorrow♫
♫Trying to fill up what's hollow♫
♫You gonna know my name♫
♫Well, you gonna know my name♫
♫Bright lights, big city going to my head♫
♫Bright lights, big city going to my head♫
♫Bright lights, big city going to my head♫
♫I don't care, no♫
♫'Cause you don't care, no♫
♫Get lost in this city, try to find myself♫
♫I went up a different person♫
♫Came down somebody else♫
♫I know it ain't right♫
♫But it's all in my head♫
♫Ooh, I'm surprised that I'm still alive♫
♫I should be dead♫
♫Bright lights, big city going to my head♫
♫Bright lights, big city going to my head♫
♫Bright lights, big city going to my head♫
♫I don't care, no♫
♫'Cause you don't care♫
♫Well, you gonna know my name♫
♫Well, you gonna know my name♫
♫Well, you gonna know my name♫
♫Hey!♫
♫Well, you gonna know my name by the end of the night♫
[Cheers and applause]

♫The lights go out and I can't be saved♫
♫Tides that I tried to swim against♫
♫Have brought me down upon my knees♫
♫Oh, and I beg, I beg and plead, singing♫
♫Come out of things unsaid♫
♫Shoot an apple off my head with a♫
♫Trouble that can't be named♫
♫A tiger's waiting to be tamed, singing♫
♫You are♫
♫You are♫
♫If you believed they put a man on the moon♫
♫Man on the moon♫
♫If you believe there's nothing up his sleeve♫
♫Then nothing is cool♫
♫If you believed they put a man on the moon♫
♫Man on the moon♫
♫If you believed there's nothing up his sleeve♫
♫Then nothing is cool♫
♫If you believed they put a man on the moon♫
♫Man on the moon♫
♫If you believed there's nothing up my sleeve♫
♫Then nothing is cool♫
♫Cool♫
[Playing "Keep the Car Running"]
♫There's a fear I keep so deep♫
♫Knew its name since before I could speak, yeah♫
♫Aaaaah aaaaah aaaaah aaaaah♫
♫They know my name 'cause I told it to them♫
♫But they don't know where and they don't know when♫
♫It's coming♫
♫Oh, when, but it's coming♫
♫Keep the car running♫
♫Keep you in the dark♫
The Foo Fighters appeared on "Austin City Limits" in 2008.
♫You know they all pretend♫
♫Yeah♫
♫What if I say I'm not like the others?♫
♫What if I say I'm not just another one of your plays?♫
♫You're the pretender♫
♫What if I say I will never surrender?♫
♫What if I say I'm not like the others?♫
♫What if I say I'm not just another one of your plays?♫
♫You're the pretender♫
♫What if I say I will never surrender?♫
And now they return to the historic original "ACL" stage,
alone in Studio 6A, for a one-of-a-kind performance.
DAVE GROHL: As a kid, growing up,
watching "Austin City Limits" on television,
it was a huge honor to be invited here
to play with the Foo Fighters years ago.
And it's a huge honor to be back on this stage,
performing a song by one of Austin's greatest heroes,
Roky Erickson.
This song is called "Two-Headed Dog."
1, 2, 3.
[Playing "Two-Headed Dog"]
♫Two-headed dog, two-headed dog♫
♫I've been working in the Kremlin♫
♫With a two-headed dog♫
♫Two-headed dog, two-headed dog♫
♫I've been working in the Kremlin♫
♫With a two-headed dog♫
♫Peace brought back, bought back♫
♫Relaxed be nyet brought back♫
♫Did you dry her out and wind her out like jerky?♫
♫To me she's heeled to attack♫
♫Two-headed dog, two-headed dog♫
♫I've been working in the Kremlin♫
♫With a two-headed dog♫
♫Two-headed dog, two-headed dog♫
♫I've been working in the Kremlin♫
♫With a two-headed dog♫
♫Children nailed to the cross♫
♫Pain does not look our hell♫
♫Certainly is not a spell♫
♫Sweet waste from a well♫
♫Two-headed dog, two-headed dog♫
♫I've been working in the Kremlin♫
♫With a two-headed dog♫
♫Two-headed dog, two-headed dog♫
♫I've been working in the Kremlin♫
♫With a two-headed dog♫
♫Winds quiet in the night♫
♫Her body just blows messiah♫
♫Sickening sweet sight left or right♫
♫It's all right, does not please my appetite♫
♫Two-headed dog, two-headed dog♫
♫I've been working in the Kremlin♫
♫With a two-headed dog♫
♫Two-headed, two-headed, two-headed dog♫
♫I've been working in the Kremlin♫
♫With a two-headed dog♫
♫Two-headed, two-headed, two-headed dog♫
♫Two-headed, two-headed, two-headed dog♫
♫Two-headed, two-headed, two-headed dog♫
♫Aw-oo!♫
[Cheers and applause]
BRIDGES: Let's hear it for the Foo Fighters!
In 2009, the original "Austin City Limits" studio
was declared a historic rock and roll landmark
by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
[Cheers and applause]
Many of the greatest rock and roll legends ever
have stood on that stage over the last 40 years.
Now, does this show rock, or what?
Come on!
Huh?
[Cheers and applause]
All right, well, now it's time to turn the spotlight on a woman
who rocks with beauty and amazing grace --
my co-host tonight.
She's got one of the most recognizable voices
in music today.
Once again, here is Sheryl Crow.
[Cheers and applause]
[Playing "Can't Cry Anymore"]
♫Took your car♫
♫Drove to Texas♫
♫Sorry, honey♫
♫I suspected we were through♫
♫And I can't cry anymore♫
♫Since I left, I've been feelin' better♫
♫That's what you get when you stay together too long♫
♫I can't cry anymore♫
♫Wouldn't it be good if we could hop a flight to anywhere♫
♫So long to this life♫
♫So much for pretending♫
♫Bad luck's never-ending♫
♫And now I know that♫
♫Aw, money comes in♫
♫But the fact is♫
♫There's not enough to pay my taxes♫
♫And I, I can't cry anymore♫
♫I got a brother♫
♫He's got real problems♫
♫Heroin -- there's just no stopping him tonight♫
♫And I won't cry anymore♫
♫Wouldn't it be good if we could hop a flight to anywhere♫
♫So long to this life♫
♫So much for pretending♫
♫Bad luck's never-ending♫
♫It's never-ending♫
♫Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh♫
♫Yeah♫
♫It could be worse♫
♫I could've missed my calling♫
♫Sometimes it hurts♫
♫When you read the writing on the wall♫
♫You won't cry anymore♫
♫Oh, oh♫
♫Wouldn't it be good if we could hop a flight to anywhere♫
♫So long to this life♫
♫So much for pretending♫
♫Bad luck's never-ending♫
♫So much time I've been spending♫
♫With my heart in my hands♫
♫Waiting for time to come and mend it, ooh♫
♫Well♫
♫I, I can't cry anymore♫
♫I can't cry no more♫
♫You ain't gonna see me, no, you ain't gonna see me, no♫
♫Walking around my house, walking around my house♫
♫Waiting for you to come on back home♫
[Cheers and applause]
Peter Stroud!
And, of course, the great Doyle Bramhall II.
So it's my treat to get to introduce
one of my dearest, dearest friends
and a huge inspiration in my life.
He produced one of my records, and he's --
I've always told him this --
he's got my favorite voice of all time.
So it's always fun for me
to get to sing with Doyle Bramhall II.
Let's hear it for him.
[Cheers and applause]
[Playing "I'm Leavin'"]
♫Felt like turning away♫
♫'Cause I paid and paid♫
♫A price too high for me to stay♫
♫It was clear to me♫
♫Pride won't set you free♫
♫This home ain't what it's supposed to be♫
♫Old man told me♫
♫You ain't nothing without me♫
♫Now I'm leavin'♫
♫And mama's cryin'♫
♫Please don't go♫
♫The devil I knew♫
♫Had me tied and true♫
♫My cross to bear that I broke through♫
♫Say believers♫
♫Ain't believin'♫
♫And wishers ain't wishin' for more♫
♫Old man told me♫
♫You ain't nothing without me♫
♫Now I'm leavin'♫
♫And mama's cryin'♫
♫Please don't go♫
♫I got no lock and chain♫
♫I got no lock and chain, baby♫
♫I got no lock and chain♫
♫I got no lock and chain, baby♫
♫And you can't keep me down♫
♫Oh, no♫
♫Huh!♫
♫Old man told me♫
♫You got wishes♫
♫And if wishes were horses, we'd all ride, yeah♫
♫I'm leavin'♫
♫I won't be back again♫
♫'Cause I'm leavin'♫
CROW:♫Whoa♫
♫And I'm leavin'♫
♫Whoa, ride, baby, ride me♫
♫And I'm leavin', yeah♫
♫Oh♫
♫Whoa oh♫
[Cheers and applause]
Doyle Bramhall II.
There are no limits to "Austin City Limits," really.
[Laughs]
For 40 years, "ACL" has showcased
every genre, every style of music.
If it's good, fresh, original, and exciting,
you're going to find it right here.
[Cheers and applause]
Now, a perfect example is this next band,
also from Austin,
that describes itself as a Latin funk orchestra.
Hearing is believing,
so let's hear it for Grupo Fantasma!
[Cheers and applause]
[Playing "Mulato"]
♫Hey, you, mulato, mulato y nacatamal♫
♫Oye, mulato, mulato nocturnal♫
♫Hey, you, mulato, mulato y nacatamal♫
♫Oye, mulato, mulato nocturnal♫
♫¿Dónde vas?♫
♫buscando ese trasero♫
♫¿dónde vas?♫
♫buscando ese tesoro-o♫
♫¿Con quién vas?♫
♫detrás de...♫
♫¿Con quién vas?♫
♫y te diré quién es, eh!♫
♫Hey, you, mulato, mulato y nacatamal♫
♫Oye, mulato, mulato nocturnal♫
♫Oh oh!♫
♫Hey, you, mulato, mulato y nacatamal♫
♫Oye, mulato, mulato nocturnal♫
♫Hey, you, mulato, mulato y nacatamal♫
♫Oye, mulato, mulato nocturnal♫
♫¿Dónde vas?♫
♫buscando ese trasero-o-o♫
♫¿dónde vas?♫
♫detrás de ese tesoro♫
♫¿Con quién vas?♫
♫detrás de...♫
♫¿Con quién vas?♫
[Cheering and applause]
♫Ponte, ponte de pie♫
♫Ay, morena, a, tú sigues bailando♫
♫Ponte, ponte de pie♫
♫Everybody, everybody, clap your hands♫
♫Ponte, ponte de pie♫
♫On your feet, on your feet, everybody♫
♫Ponte, ponte de pie♫
And dance!
Look out!
Oh!
Oh, look out!
♫Hey, you, mulato, mulato y nacatamal♫
♫Oye, mulato, mulato nocturnal♫
♫Hey, you, mulato, mulato y nacatamal♫
♫Oye, mulato, mulato nocturnal♫
♫¿Dónde vas?♫
♫buscando ese trasero-o-o♫
♫¿dónde vas?♫
♫detrás de ese tesoro♫
♫¿Con quién vas?♫
♫detrás de...♫
♫¿Con quién vas?♫
She say!
iY nos vamos!
Aha!
Thank you, ladies and gentlemen.
Thank you, "ACL."
Eso muchas gracias.
[Cheers and applause]
Right.
Hey, everybody, who doesn't get the blues?
Everybody gets the blues, right?
Not everybody can sing it or play it like this guy.
He and his brother Stevie Ray are Austin legends.
[Cheers and applause]
Yes, they are.
And they are vital links to the roots
of this unique American music style.
If you want to hear what the blues sound like
in the 21st century, get ready
for the one and only Jimmie Vaughan,
along with one of my favorite voices of all time,
Bonnie Raitt.
[Cheers and applause]
[Playing "The Pleasure's All Mine"]
♫You think I only want your money♫
♫You think I'm handing you a lie♫
♫But I'm ready, willing, and able♫
♫To give my lovin' all the time♫
♫'Cause you don't have to beg me for my lovin'♫
♫You know the pleasure's all mine♫
♫I go with the little gifts you buy me♫
♫Oh, it's so sweet a lovin' and kind♫
♫It's love I want, so don't deny me♫
♫'Cause a love like yours is hard to find♫
♫You won't have to beg me for my loving♫
♫Because the pleasure's all mine♫
♫Baby, I go where you send me♫
♫And I come when you call♫
♫I want your love, not your money♫
♫Your money can't buy my love at all♫
♫Baby, I go where you send me♫
♫You know I come, baby, when you call♫
♫You know I love you, pretty baby♫
♫'Cause money can't buy my love at all♫
♫You know what I like, that's why I love you♫
♫Even if you never have a dime♫
♫You know, baby, you're still my sweet, fine, healthy baby♫
♫And I will love you all the time♫
♫'Cause you don't have to beg me for my lovin'♫
♫You know the pleasure's all mine♫
♫You don't have to beg me for my lovin'♫
♫Because the pleasure's all mine♫
♫Said the pleasure's all mine♫
♫Pleasure's all♫
[Cheers and applause]
The pleasure's all mine.
Bonnie Raitt.
I love Jimmie Vaughan.
A celebration of "Austin City Limits'" 40 years
would not be complete without a tribute to one of
the most powerful acts in "ACL" history, Stevie Ray Vaughan.
♫I was walkin' the tightrope♫
♫Steppin' on my friends♫
♫Walkin' the tightrope♫
♫It was a shame and a sin♫
♫Walkin' the tightrope♫
♫Bring it all around♫
♫Walkin' the tightrope♫
♫From the lost and found♫
♫Stranded♫
♫Caught in the cross fire♫
Help me.
[Cheers and applause]
Thank you so much.
That was a song written by Double Trouble.
All of it.
Now, once again, we return to the original Studio 6A
and Matthew McConaughey.
All right.
All right, all right.
Hey, I got to...
All right, all right, all right.
That's a fact.
All right.
Eric Clapton was driving in his car
the first time he heard him play guitar on the radio,
and he said he had to pull over.
He was one of the most influential and innovative
electric guitarists in the history of blues music.
In an all-too-short career of only seven years,
Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble
blazed their way to the top.
His life ended at the age of 35, but the music lives on.
And in so many ways, Stevie Ray still represents
the musical heart and soul
of Austin.
[Applause]
With us here tonight are the original members
of Double Trouble --
Chris Layton, Tommy Shannon, and Reese Wynans.
All right.
[Cheers and applause]
LAYTON: Thank you.
I have to start by saying that Stevie is still here,
he's here in this building.
[Cheers and applause]
So what we'd like to do is welcome to the stage,
please, if you will,
Mike Farris and Kenny Wayne Shepherd.
[Cheers and applause]
[Playing "The House is Rockin'"]
♫Well, the house is a-rockin', don't bother knockin'♫
♫If the house is a-rockin', don't bother knockin'♫
♫If the house is a-rockin', don't bother, come on in♫
Kick off your shoes, start losin' the blues
♫This old house ain't got nothin' to lose♫
♫Seen it all for years, start spreadin' the news♫
♫Get out on the floor♫
♫Come on, baby, shake somethin' loose♫
♫Well, the house is a-rockin', don't bother knockin'♫
♫Yeah, the house is a-rockin', don't bother knockin'♫
♫If the house is a-rockin', don't bother, come on in♫
Ha ha hey!
Yeah, yeah, yeah!
♫Well, the house is a-rockin', don't bother knockin'♫
♫If the house is a-rockin', don't bother knockin'♫
♫If the house is a-rockin', don't bother, come on in♫
♫Walk up the street, you can hear the sound♫
♫Of some bad honky-tonkers layin' it down♫
♫They've seen it all for years♫
♫Just have nothin' to lose♫
♫So get out on the floor♫
♫Shimmy, shake somethin' loose♫
You sing!
♫If the house is a-rockin', don't bother knockin'♫
♫If the house is a-rockin', don't bother knockin'♫
♫If the house is a-rockin', don't bother, come on in♫
♫If the house is a-rockin', don't bother, come on in♫
[Cheers and applause]
LAYTON: Ladies and gentlemen,
please welcome, from the eastern coast
of the United States of America,
West Orange, New Jersey, Mr. Robert Randolph.
[Cheers and applause]
RANDOLPH: "Pride and Joy."
[Playing "Pride and Joy:]
♫Well, you've heard about love givin' sight to the blind♫
♫Who's giving love without the sun to shine?♫
♫She's my sweet, little thing♫
♫She's my pride and joy♫
♫She's my sweet, little baby♫
♫I'm her little lover boy♫
♫Yeah, I love my baby♫
♫my heart and soul♫
♫Love like ours won't never grow old♫
♫She's my sweet, little thing♫
♫She's my pride and joy♫
♫She's my sweet, little baby♫
♫I'm her little lover boy♫
♫Yeah, I love my baby♫
♫She's long and lean♫
♫You mess with her, you'll see a man get mean♫
♫She's my sweet, little thing♫
♫She's my pride and joy♫
♫She's my sweet, little baby♫
♫I'm her little lover boy♫
♫Well, I love my baby like the finest wine♫
♫You stick with her until the end of time♫
♫She's my sweet, little thing♫
♫She's my pride and joy♫
♫She's my sweet, little baby♫
♫I'm her little lover boy♫
♫Yeah I love my baby, my heart and soul♫
♫Love like ours won't never grow old♫
♫She's my sweet little thing♫
♫She's my pride and joy♫
♫She's my sweet, little baby♫
♫I'm her little lover boy♫
All right!
[Cheers and applause]
Thank you so very much!
May God bless all of you.
Ladies and gentlemen,
would you please make welcome to the stage the inimitable,
the wonderful, and the legendary Mr.
Buddy Guy.
[Cheers and applause]
[Playing "Mary Had a Little Lamb"]
♫Mary had a little lamb♫
♫It's fleece was white as snow♫
♫Everywhere the child went♫
♫The lamb was sure to go♫
♫He followed her to school one day♫
♫They broke the teacher's rule♫
♫What a time did they have♫
♫That day at school♫
♫Tisket, tasket♫
♫My green-and-yellow basket♫
♫I wrote a letter to my baby♫
♫On my way, I passed it♫
♫I did, yeah♫
♫Tisket, tasket♫
♫This little green-and-yellow basket♫
♫I wrote a letter to my baby♫
♫And on my way, I passed it♫
[Cheers and applause]
Thank you!
[Cheers and applause]
Ladies and gentlemen, for our final number tonight,
would you please welcome back on the stage
Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Doyle Bramhall,
Mickey Raphael, Lukas Nelson, Robert Randolph, Jr.,
Lyle Lovett, Buddy Guy, and Mr. Willie Nelson.
[Cheers and applause]
[Playing "Texas Flood"]
♫Well, it's floodin' down in Texas♫
♫All the telephone lines are down♫
♫Yes, it's floodin' down in Texas♫
♫And all the telephone lines are down♫
♫I been tryin' to call my baby♫
♫Lord, I can't get a single sound♫
♫Dark clouds are rollin'♫
♫And I'm standin' out in the rain♫
♫Well, the dark clouds are rollin'♫
♫My, and I'm standin' out in the rain♫
♫The water keep on rollin'♫
♫And it's about to drive poor old me insane♫
LOVETT:♫Well, I'm leavin' you, baby♫
♫You know I'm goin' back home to stay♫
♫Well, I'm leavin' you, baby♫
♫And, Lord, I'm goin' back home to stay♫
♫Back home there ain't no floods and tornados♫
♫Yeah, and the sun shines every day♫
[Cheers and applause]
CROW: Whoo!
All right!
We're back at the Moody Theater in downtown Austin.
Let's hear it again for Willie Nelson
and Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble.
[Cheers and applause]
And congratulations, "Austin City Limits."
Let's bring this party home with a classic
by another Texas music legend from Lubbock,
because just like Buddy Holly,
"Austin City Limits" will never fade away.
Joe, you're from Lubbock.
Why don't you kick this off?
ELY: All right, man.
[Playing "Not Fade Away"]
♫I'm a-gonna tell you how it's gonna be♫
♫You're gonna give your love to me♫
♫A love to last more than just one day♫
♫Love a love not fade away♫
♫A love for real and not fade away♫
♫My love is bigger than a Cadillac♫
♫I try to show it, and you drive me back♫
♫Your love for me has got to be real♫
♫For you to know just how I feel♫
♫A love for real not fade away♫
♫A love for real not fade away♫
♫I'm gonna tell you how it's gonna be♫
♫You're gonna give your love to me♫
♫A love to love to last one day♫
Oh
♫A love a love not fade away♫
♫Love to love and not fade away♫
♫Love to love and not fade away♫
♫My love is bigger than a Cadillac♫
♫I tried it, you shove me back♫
♫Your love for me has got to be real♫
♫For you to know just how I feel♫
♫Love to love and not fade away♫
♫Love to love and not fade away♫
♫Love to love and not fade away♫
♫Love to love and not fade away♫
♫Love to love and not fade away♫
♫Love to love and not fade away♫
♫Love to love and not fade away♫
♫Love for real and not fade away♫
♫Love a love and not fade away♫
♫Love a love and not fade away♫
♫Love a love and not fade away♫
♫Love a love and not fade away♫
♫Love a love and not fade away♫
♫Love a love and not fade away♫
♫Love a love and not fade away♫
[Cheers and applause]
